What kind of place is Hachioji(八王子)?

Hachioji is one of the core cities of Tokyo, the capital of Japan. It is a representative residential area of Tokyo, as well as a railroad hub for travel to central Tokyo and Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures.
It is where Arawi, the author of Nichijou, lived temporarily when he moved to Tokyo from Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture. Because of this, the scenery of Hachioji City was used as a background for the manga and anime.

Pilgrimage sites of Anime “Nichijou” in Hachiouji

7-Eleven Hachioji Koyasu 3-chome (Intersection while waiting for a signal)

The model for the coin parking sign seen in the background of the scene where Yukko is waiting for a traffic light.

If you look at the 7-Eleven sign with the apartment building behind you, it matches the background of the anime.

Tensho-an (Model for Daiku Cafe)

The shop that served as the model for Daiku Cafe. A yakiniku restaurant is located in the same building.

It has been officially recognized by the “Nichijou” TV Anime Production Committee as the shop that served as the certified model for Daiku Cafe. In other words, it is an “officially recognized Holy Site.”

Due to its convenient location for traveling to other spots and its status as an officially recognized dining facility, it serves as an excellent base for a pilgrimage to the locations of “Nichijou” and “CITY.”

It is also frequently used as a venue for fan meetings for Keiichi Arawi’s works.

Vending Machine Corner

A distinctive area where many vending machines are lined up. In the anime, this was the setting for the story where Mio performs a “Dragon Screw” on Yukko and the goat.

Hachioji Station North / West Radial Road U-Road (Entrance to Tokisadame Shopping Street)

The model for the entrance to “Tokisadame Shopping Street” in Tokisadame City. It appears the monument at the entrance of the shopping street was reflected in the anime.

(Street View from around 2024)

By 2025, the gate of the shopping street seems to have been removed due to the installation of a pedestrian bridge, and almost no trace of it remains today.

Lawson Hachioji Minami-Shinmachi (Tico Mart Background)

The convenience store where Yukko ordered the “Agonizing! Piping Hot Chef’s Fancy Chicken Bar” and suffered a huge embarrassment. Hasegawa-san works here.

The arrangement of the convenience store, utility poles, and buildings is very similar, and since it is close to other holy sites, it is presumed to be the model for the background.

Additionally, there is a real-life origin for the name “Tico Mart,” which comes from “Chico Mart,” a convenience store chain that expanded nationwide until 2005.

Tenman Jinja (Tenmangu)

The shrine that appears in the story where the “Scharaka Trio” (Yukko, Mio, and Mai) get caught in the rain. In the anime, it appears under the name “Tenmangu,” but the real-life location is named “Ueno Tenman Jinja.” This is another spot where the scenery is almost exactly as it appears in the anime, rivaling the vending machine corner.

Yukko and the others were sitting on the stairs at the entrance of this shrine.

In the shrine grounds, there is a sign with a slogan wishing for world peace, and this sign also appears in the anime.

Rock-Paper-Scissors Stairs

The stairs where Yukko and her friends were playing “Janken Glico” (a game based on rock-paper-scissors). The stairs on the right side of the photo appear in the anime. Please note that the stairs on the left are private property leading to an apartment, so do not climb them.

In the anime, the stairs look wide enough for about three people to stand side-by-side, but the actual stairs are quite narrow, barely wide enough for one person to walk.

The view from the top.

*Since this is located deep within a residential area, the map will not be posted to avoid inconveniencing local residents.

End of the Y-junction

There is also a real-life model for the end of the Y-junction and the private house depicted in the scene transition of Episode 3.

Map

*Since this is located deep within a residential area, both the map and photos will not be posted to avoid inconveniencing local residents. Furthermore, surrounding buildings have been rebuilt, so almost no traces of the area from the time of the anime adaptation remain.

Okadomachi Park (Nagashi-Somen Park)

The park where Annaka-san attended a Nagashi-Somen (flowing noodles) event and kept shouting “Eeeh?!” at the various absurdities. It is located near the Chuo Line tracks. The park’s name is “Okadomachi Chibikko Park.”

Next to the park is a private house with an atmosphere similar to the home of the Nagashi-Somen Lady. However, since it is a regular residence, please be careful not to cause any trouble.

The slide where Hakase was sliding in the first “Nichijou” ED, and the sandbox where Yukko and her friends played in Episode 3 (“I want to go to New Orleans”) are also here.

Spots with deep connections to Arawi-sensei (though not Holy Sites)

Jun-kissa Sabo Den-en (Hachioji City)

A coffee shop located on the second floor of a building behind Hachioji Station. Keiichi Arawi-sensei used to visit here frequently during his days as a comedian before becoming a manga artist, where he and his partner would brainstorm their comedy routines.

Since becoming a manga artist and leaving Hachioji, he reportedly visits “Den-en” less often, but an autographed illustration sent by Arawi-sensei is displayed in the shop. Although it doesn’t appear directly in the anime or manga, it remains popular among hardcore “Nichijou” fans.

Shinonome Park / Shinonome Second Park (Hachioji City)

Park facilities located in Hachioji City. While the direct connection to “Nichijou” or other Keiichi Arawi works is unknown, it is highly likely that Arawi-san was aware of Shinonome Park because it is located near “Super Alps Daimachi Store,” which is the real-life basis for “Super Daibosatsu” in “CITY.”

There are two parks: Shinonome Park and Shinonome Second Park. The original Shinonome Park is a nature park with managed artificial forests, while Shinonome Second Park is a park for young children and students with various play equipment.

Kotobukiya Headquarters Building (Tachikawa City)

The headquarters building of the Japanese plastic model manufacturer “Kotobukiya.” In 2023, a plastic model of the headquarters building was released to commemorate their 70th anniversary, and Keiichi Arawi-sensei was in charge of the package illustration.

Arai Internal Medicine & Neurology Clinic (Ota Ward)

An internal medicine clinic located in Higashikojiya, Ota Ward, Tokyo. Arawi-sensei was responsible for creating the building’s signage and character illustrations.

As the name suggests, the clinic is headed by Director Daisuke Arai, but it is said that he is not directly related to Keiichi Arawi-sensei.

As a side note, the blog owner received a COVID-19 vaccination here and had the opportunity to speak with Daisuke Arai. If my memory is correct, this collaboration came about because Dr. Arai’s family were fans of “Nichijou.”

Arai Visiting Nursing Station (Ota Ward)

A medical facility in Higashikojiya, Ota Ward, Tokyo. As the name suggests, it is represented by Daisuke Arai, who is also the director of the Arai Internal Medicine & Neurology Clinic. Like the clinic, illustrations by Keiichi Arawi-sensei are drawn on the glass doors of the facility.

It’s easy to forget to visit this spot if you only look at the clinic, so make sure not to miss it when observing from the outside.
